Jon Grant created Couloir Winery to pursue his passion as an artisan through wine. Through his brands – Couloir Wines and Straight Line wines, he combines the right grapes from the right locations to produce wines that are indicative not only of their varieties but location. He utilizes minimal winemaking techniques and manipulation so that each wine truly illustrates site-specific characteristic, the true essence behind the ‘terrior’ concept of the French. Straight Line Wines are designed to over deliver at a reasonable price point.
Technicals: 90% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano; a mixture of Couloir’s best vineyards; aged 11 months in new French oak.
First Impression: Brilliant, deep and dark magenta colored wine with bright and aromatic fruit fragrances.
Taste: A complex wine with structured flavors, full finish, yet softened tannins. Flavors of fig, blueberry, blackberry, chocolate, plum, and tobacco.
Special Notes: This wine is made from grapes from three different vineyards – Madder Lake (north of Napa), Liberty Oaks (Lodi), and Terra Alta (Lockeford, CA). The variety combination of Tempranillo and Graciano (an ancient Spanish varietal), paired with the location and hence climatic differences gives the wine a deeper balance and complexity.
Pairing Tips: Tempranillo is a medium bodied wine that pairs well with a heavy, but not over powering cuisine. Classic pairings include traditional Spanish dishes (it is a Spanish grape), like paella. From our recipes try Saffron Tagliatelle with Shrimp & Herbed Goat Cheese; Shrimp and Grits with Smoked Mozzarella.
